Fragrance in Skincare: What "Parfum" on a Label Means
Share
Short answer: "Parfum" on an EU ingredient list means the product contains a fragrance blend, which can hold dozens of scent ingredients under one word. Certain fragrance allergens must also be named separately above set levels. "Fragrance-free" means nothing was added for scent. "Unscented" only means you cannot smell it, and may still involve a masking fragrance.
- Label word: Parfum on EU labels (Fragrance on US labels). Aroma is used for flavour, for example in lip products.
- What it covers: a blend whose exact recipe is usually a trade secret.
- What must be named: specific fragrance allergens such as Linalool or Limonene, once they pass set levels.
- In our range: two products are fragrance-free, five contain Parfum, and for the rest the full ingredient list tells you.
What does "Parfum" mean on an ingredient list?
It means a fragrance blend was added to the product. Under the EU Cosmetics Regulation 1223/2009, every ingredient must be listed by its standard INCI name, but a fragrance blend may be declared with the single word Parfum. That blend might contain a handful of materials or several dozen, natural or synthetic or both.
The trade-off for that secrecy is a separate rule. Fragrance ingredients known to cause allergies in some people must be named individually on the label once they exceed set concentrations. That is why you often see Parfum near the end of a list, followed by names such as Linalool, Limonene, Citronellol or Geraniol.
Why do skincare products contain fragrance?
Mostly for the experience. A pleasant scent makes a routine feel like a ritual, and people use products they enjoy more consistently. Fragrance also masks the natural smell of raw materials, some of which smell fatty, earthy or medicinal on their own. And for many brands, a signature scent is part of their identity.
What fragrance does not do is change how your skin looks. It is there for you, not for your skin. That is a perfectly good reason to include it, as long as the label is honest about it.
Is fragrance bad for your skin?
For most people, no. Most people use fragranced products every day without any problem. Fragrance is, however, one of the most frequent causes of allergic reactions to cosmetics, which is exactly why the EU requires individual allergens to be named. If your skin reacts easily, fewer scent ingredients means fewer variables, especially in products you leave on the face all day and around the eyes.
Rinse-off products such as cleansers stay on the skin briefly, so their fragrance is less of a concern for most people than a cream or serum that stays on for hours.
Fragrance-free, unscented or no added fragrance: what's the difference?
These phrases sound similar but promise different things.
| Label phrase | What it usually means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Fragrance-free | No ingredients added to give the product a scent | The ingredient list should show no Parfum and no scenting essential oils. |
| No added fragrance | The same intent; raw materials may still have a faint smell of their own | As above. |
| Unscented | No noticeable smell; a masking fragrance may have been used to neutralise odours | Look for Parfum on the list. |
| Natural fragrance or essential oils | Scent comes from plant oils such as lavender, rose or peppermint | These are listed by plant name and can contain allergens such as Linalool. |
| Parfum | A fragrance blend has been added | Read the named allergens that follow it. |
Do essential oils count as fragrance?
In practice, yes. Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts, and when they give a product its scent they do the same job as a perfume blend. They are listed under their botanical names, for example Lavandula Angustifolia Oil, rather than as Parfum. They also contain naturally occurring allergens: lavender oil contains linalool, citrus oils contain limonene. "Natural" scent is not automatically gentler than synthetic scent.

For our other products, check the full ingredient list on each product page before you decide. Several have a noticeable scent from their formula: the Gentle Rose Cleansing Foam has a soft floral scent, the face exfoliator smells of lime, green tea and spearmint with a cool touch of menthol, the Omega 6-9 body oil has aromatic notes of green cardamom, rosemary and galbanum, and the rosemary hair oil is built on rosemary and peppermint oils. The ingredient list shows exactly what gives each one its scent.
How do you choose if your skin reacts easily?
Start with fragrance-free products for anything you leave on the face, and especially anything near the eyes. Our Exosome & Niacinamide Serum is a lightweight, fragrance-free serum with niacinamide, two forms of hyaluronic acid and a gentle touch of lactic acid. Apply one or two pumps to clean skin, follow with moisturiser, and finish with sunscreen in the morning. It does contain a gentle touch of lactic acid, so introduce it slowly and patch test first. For the under-eye area, our Hydrogel Anti-Aging Eye Patches are fragrance-free too: leave them on for about 15 minutes, then pat the remaining serum in.
Introduce one new product at a time, and patch test each one on the inner arm for a few days. If a doctor has diagnosed a fragrance allergy, ask which specific substances to avoid, then look for those names on every label. You can browse the full skincare collection with the table above in mind.
Common mistakes when reading fragrance on labels
- Assuming essential oils mean fragrance-free. They are fragrance, listed under a different name.
- Trusting "unscented" as if it meant fragrance-free. Check the list for Parfum.
- Judging by smell. A fragrance-free product can smell of its raw materials. A fragranced one can smell faint.
- Blaming fragrance for every tingle. Acids, retinoids and high-strength actives can tingle too.
- Replacing the whole routine at once. Change one product at a time so you know what made the difference.
Frequently asked questions
Does fragrance-free mean the product has no smell?
Not always. Fragrance-free means nothing was added for scent, but oils, butters and plant extracts can have a faint natural smell. That smell is not a sign of hidden fragrance.
Is parfum in skincare harmful?
For most people it is simply a pleasant addition. A minority react to certain fragrance ingredients, which is why the EU requires the most common allergens to be named. If your skin reacts easily, choose fragrance-free leave-on products.
Are essential oils better than synthetic fragrance?
Not automatically. Essential oils contain naturally occurring allergens such as linalool and limonene, and they can be just as likely to bother reactive skin. Judge by the ingredient list, not by the word natural.
Which L'ESTHETIQ products are fragrance-free?
The Exosome & Niacinamide Serum and the Hydrogel Anti-Aging Eye Patches. The vitamin C serum, peptide serum, prebiotic jelly serum, ceramide night cream and peptide eye cream contain fragrance. For the others, check the full ingredient list on the product page.
Is fragrance in a cleanser a problem?
It is less of a concern than in a leave-on product, because a cleanser is rinsed away within a minute. If your skin reacts even to rinse-off products, choose a fragrance-free cleanser as well.
