Aloe Vera in Skincare: Why It's Everywhere
Share
Short answer: Aloe vera is in so many products because the clear gel inside its leaf is mostly water with natural polysaccharides, so it makes a light, comforting base that helps skin feel hydrated and cool. It is a supporting ingredient. It makes formulas feel pleasant and adds a little hydration, but it does not change skin on its own.
- INCI names: Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Leaf Juice Powder or Leaf Extract.
- What it is: the inner leaf gel, mostly water, with polysaccharides, sugars, amino acids and minerals.
- What it does: helps skin feel hydrated, cool and comfortable.
- Where you'll find it: almost everywhere, from cleansers and creams to serums and eye patches.
What is aloe vera in skincare?
It is the gel from inside the thick leaves of Aloe barbadensis, the plant most people know as aloe vera. The leaf has three layers: a tough green skin, a thin layer of bitter yellow sap just underneath it, and the clear inner gel. Cosmetic aloe is made from the inner gel. The bitter sap is usually filtered out, because it is the part most likely to irritate skin.
The gel itself is over nine-tenths water. The rest is a mix of long-chain sugars called polysaccharides, simple sugars, amino acids, minerals and small amounts of vitamins. The polysaccharides give aloe its slippery feel and are the main reason it is useful.
What does aloe vera actually do for skin?
It helps skin feel hydrated and comfortable. The polysaccharides hold water and leave a light film as they dry, which makes skin feel smoother and less tight. Aloe also feels cool on application, and many people find that comforting after a long day, a hot day or a shave.
That is the honest scope of it. Aloe is a good supporting ingredient. Any visible change you see from an aloe-based product comes from the formula as a whole: the humectants, the oils, the actives and how they work together.
Why is aloe vera in so many products?
Because it is useful to formulators and familiar to shoppers, and few ingredients are both.
- It can replace water. Aloe juice can stand in for some or all of the water in a cream or serum, which gives the base a little extra hydration and a softer feel.
- It is easy to work with. It mixes into water-based formulas without fuss and does not fight with most actives.
- It suits natural-certified formulas. As a plant ingredient, it fits the requirements of natural and organic standards.
- People recognise it. Aloe is one of the few ingredient names almost everyone knows, and it reads as gentle.
Aloe juice, gel, powder or extract: what's the difference?
The name on the label tells you what form was used, and its position tells you roughly how much.
| Name on the label | What it is | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice | Liquid from the inner leaf | Often used in place of water; can sit high on the list. |
| Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice Powder | Dried juice, mixed back with water in the factory | Labels such as "200x" refer to how concentrated the powder is. |
| Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract | An extract of the leaf | Usually used in smaller amounts. |
| "Aloe gel" (marketing name) | Thickened aloe juice | Pure aloe gels still need thickeners and preservatives; check the full list. |
How do you tell how much aloe a product contains?
Look at where it appears on the ingredient list. Under EU rules, ingredients are listed in descending order of weight down to 1 percent, after which they may appear in any order. If aloe juice is first or second, the formula is built on it. If aloe extract appears after the preservatives, it is a small addition. Neither is wrong. They are simply different products.
Where does aloe appear in L'ESTHETIQ products?
In several of our face products, always as part of a larger formula.
Our Anti-Age Day Cream combines aloe with two forms of hyaluronic acid, a marine ferment, jojoba oil, shea butter and avocado oil for normal, dry and mature skin. Aloe adds to the soft, comfortable feel through the day. Use one pump in the morning after your serum and finish with your sunscreen.
In the Peptide-Powered Anti-Aging Serum, aloe vera and blueberry seed oil help nourish and soften the skin alongside 2% hexapeptide-11, ginkgo biloba extract and hyaluronic acid. The peptides are the reason to use it. Allow a typical eight to twelve weeks of daily use before judging how fine lines look. It contains fragrance.
Our Hydrogel Anti-Aging Eye Patches pair aloe vera and panthenol with niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Leave them on for about 15 minutes, then pat the remaining serum in. They are fragrance-free. You can see the full range in our skincare collection.
Is aloe vera good after sun exposure?
An aloe gel can make skin feel cooler and more comfortable after a day outdoors. It does not undo sun exposure, and it is not a sunscreen. A sunburn is a skin injury. If your skin blisters, or you feel feverish or unwell, see a doctor or pharmacist. The reliable approach is prevention: broad-spectrum sunscreen every morning and shade at midday.
Common mistakes with aloe vera
- Using pure aloe gel as your only moisturiser. It is light and contains almost no oil. Dry skin also needs emollients.
- Applying sap straight from a houseplant. A freshly cut leaf includes the bitter yellow sap, which can irritate.
- Assuming "aloe" on the front means a lot of aloe. Check its position on the ingredient list.
- Assuming natural means no reaction. Reactions to aloe are uncommon but possible. Patch test if your skin reacts easily.
- Ignoring the rest of the formula. Many aloe gels also contain alcohol or fragrance.
What aloe vera won't do
It will not fade dark spots, firm skin or change the colour of dark circles. It will not replace sunscreen. It makes skin feel hydrated and comfortable, and it makes a formula pleasant to use every day, which is more valuable than it sounds.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use aloe vera on my face every day?
Yes, for most people. Aloe is a common ingredient in daily creams and serums. If you use a pure aloe gel, follow it with a moisturiser so skin does not feel tight later.
Does aloe vera hydrate skin?
Lightly. Its polysaccharides hold water and help skin feel hydrated and smoother. For lasting comfort, pair it with humectants such as hyaluronic acid and an emollient layer.
Is aloe vera good for oily skin?
Often, yes, because it hydrates without adding oil. A light aloe-based serum or gel moisturiser can suit skin that feels shiny by midday. Check the full formula for heavy oils.
Can I use aloe straight from the plant?
It is better not to. A cut leaf includes the bitter yellow sap, which can irritate, and a homemade gel has no preservative. A finished product uses filtered inner-leaf gel and is made to stay fresh.
Do aloe eye patches help with dark circles?
Hydrating eye patches can make the under-eye area look smoother, fresher and more rested for a while. They do not change the colour of dark circles. Persistent, very dark circles are worth mentioning to a doctor.
